Donna Jean Bishop, 94, beloved mother, grandmother, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025. A longtime resident of Amarillo, Texas, Donna spent the last five years of her life in Dalhart, surrounded by family and love.
Born on December 10, 1930, Donna lived a life rich in service, intellect, and devotion. She earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas A&M University and dedicated her career to the Amarillo Independent School District, where she retired from the Special Education department. Her passion for helping children with special needs left a lasting legacy on generations of students and educators.
A woman of deep faith and community, Donna was a charter member of Paramount Terrace/Hillside Christian Church and a current member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. Her civic and historical interests led her to proudly serve in numerous heritage societies, including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Magna Carta Society.
An avid and accomplished bridge player, Donna was a longtime Master with the American Contract Bridge League and a dedicated member of Unit 210. She was known not only for her sharp mind and strategic play but for the friendships she formed across the table.
In 1950, Donna married Joe S. Gaines, and together they had two children, Joe B. Gaines and Julie Gaines Blair. She married John Bishop in 1967, and they had one son, Judd Bishop. She was preceded in death by her children Joe and Julie, as well as her husband John.
Donna is survived by her son Judd Bishop and his wife Leslie of Amarillo; daughter-in-law Carla Gaines of Dalhart; granddaughters Avery, Peyton, and Gracyn Bishop of The Woodlands; grandsons Joe W. Gaines and wife Stephanie of Dalhart, Landon Blair and wife Scarlette of Boerne, and Cody Gaines of Round Rock. Her legacy lives on in her great-grandchildren Madison, Joseph, and Emily Gaines of Dalhart, and Lyla Gaines of Round Rock.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
