December 8, 1943 — May 28, 2025

Carl Raymond Scofield went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 28th, 2025, he was born December 8th, 1943 to Jack and Viola Scofield in Dalhart, Texas. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Scofield will receive guests from noon until 7:00PM on Tuesday at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Dalhart Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

From the beginning Carl was faced with many challenges and growing experiences. He was born prematurely and not expected to survive. For the first six months in the hospital, he was carried around in a shoebox and fed with an eye dropper, from there he had a good childhood and learned the meaning of hard work and developed a strong work ethic. Starting in the 6th grade he began cleaning stalls at the XIT Rangers along with numerous farming and ranching jobs with his dad and others in the community through his school years.

After graduating from Dalhart High School in 1963, Carl learned several new trades including pipeline welding and then spent some time working for XIT Telephone climbing poles, never wavering from his love of cowboying and working with horses and cattle, that was a passion that remained strong throughout his life.

In June of 1966, Carl was married to Barbara Hughes and they began to raise a family of four children. Shortly after they married, he began a career in Law Enforcement. His hope and belief in this were that if he could change or affect one person’s life for the better, he had done his job. He worked for Dalhart Police Department for approximately 15 years, where he was Night Captain and Lieutenant throughout his career there. During this time, he was involved in the XIT shootout in 1971 along with many other adventures.

Carl’s hard work ethic often had him working not only nights on the police force, but working cattle or custom farming during the day to provide for his family. He spent two years as a Texas Animal Health Inspector for Dallam, Hartley, Sherman and Moore counties. He later ran for Dallam County Sheriff to serve his community. Carl also served on the Dumas Police Department for 6 years.

After spending a few years in Arizona with wife Nancy and working as a security guard, he returned to Dalhart to help care for his parents in their later years. He went to work for Nortex Feedlot as a feed truck driver and night watchman, in his semi-retirement years. He enjoyed raising and trading horses and mules especially in this season of his life.

Carl was married to Eula May “Mickey” Williams in September of 1992. Over the ten years they were married they shared many adventures together, including him holding the position of Dallam County Constable while she held the office of Justice of the Peace.

Carl was passionate about his animals and serving his community. His commitment to the XIT Rangers spanned for many years, serving as the president, board member and member, this club meant the world to him. He played a huge role in helping to start the Cowboy Church that is still held at the Rangers. He had hopes of leading and bringing others closer to God.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Viola Scofield, his wife, Eula May “Mickey” Scofield, sister and brother-in-law Norma Jean and Gene Morris, great grandsons, Rhett Alexander Lujan, Henry Liam Scofield.
